Overview

Thanks to the generosity of former Galena Mayor Robert Buehler, JDCF owns an 18 acre property just north of the city limits. The site is a mix of hilly woodlands and a flat flood plain, and has become a favorite spot for residents and their canine companions to hike, bird watch, and even camp. Two local Girl Scouts, working on their Gold Project Award, cleared picnic and fishing areas, and installed benches so that the public can enjoy the views of the Galena River as it passes through the property. JDCF was recently awarded funding to put a system of gravel trails leading up to and through the Preserve which will make it biker friendly as well. To reach Buehler, cross the Meeker Street footbridge, turn left, and follow the levee for a ¼ mile to the Preserve entrance.
